Rooftop Unit Replacement at the Niagara Riverside Resort
Working on a roof overlooking a calm, peaceful Niagara River on a sunny, 78ºF day is not the worst way to spend your time! That was the case for two of Allied’s service technicians on a beautiful Tuesday in August while working on a equipment swap at the Niagara Riverside Resort in Niagara Falls. The views of the river from this resort are spectacular, but our service technicians were there on a mission.

The existing 6 ton rooftop unit serving the pool mezzanine needed repairs whose cost exceeded the value of the equipment itself; this unit was diagnosed with two failed compressors and a bad heat exchanger. Compared to the cost of a new unit, the repair cost was too large.
The decision was made to remove the old unit and install a brand new York Sunline 6 ton packaged rooftop unit with a low-leak economizer and barometric relief hood.
The beautiful river views come with one downside – access. The fact that this resort is right on the river did pose a bit of a challenge when deciding how to bring the old unit off the roof and the new unit on the roof. Enter the third member of this install team – the pro-lift. A pro-lift is a handy little contraption that allows easy maneuvering of a larger piece of equipment, such as this rooftop unit, to and from the crane’s drop site on the roof.
The crane hauled the pro-lift up to the roof where our technicians were able to unload it and bring it over to the old unit. They attached the pro-lift’s rails to the equipment rails and used the hydraulics to lift the existing unit up off it’s curb. They were then able to easily wheel the 6 ton unit over to the crane’s access point, where they could attach the old unit to the crane to be unloaded on the ground.
Once the old unit had been removed and the existing curb had been re-taped, the crane lifted the new unit up to the roof. Our technician’s attached the new unit to the pro-lift via the rails, and navigated the new unit over to it’s new home.
Now the fun begins – the installation, connections, and start-up. Our installation crew can get a unit like this installed and up and running in one 8-hour day. The training and expertise that goes into this skill is impressive and so valuable. We appreciate our technicians and the hard work they perform every day to get a job like this completed, and completed well!
